Last week I mentioned scented candles, and whenever I smell a scented candle, it reminds me of my childhood.

My father, an ex-hippie, was very DIY back in the day. That included making his own custom candles.

I was about five years old at the time, so I don’t remember much, but I do remember he was in the kitchen stirring a pot of melted wax on the stove, when he decided to add some cologne to the mix to make scented candles.

Maybe it was the fact that he was also smoking like a chimney at the time, but somehow the whole mess exploded and hot candle wax got all over him. The result was severe burns, and he still has the scars to prove it.

According to the National Candle Association (NCA), the major trade association representing U.S. candle manufacturers and their suppliers, the addition of fragrance to candles is common in the U.S., and an estimated 75 to 80 percent of candles sold in the U.S. are scented.

Making Scents
The NCA says that candle manufacturers work closely with fragrance companies to “develop scented formulations that are not only pleasing, but will burn safely and properly.” Properly-formulated scented candles produce water vapor and carbon dioxide when burned, as well as release whatever fragrance has been added, typically a combination of natural and synthetic fragrances that may be derived from essential oils or from synthetic aroma chemicals.

According to the NCA, candle manufacturers have more than 2,000 aroma chemicals and essential oils at their disposal to use to develop scents that are both pleasing to consumers and compatible with candle use (various health and safety tests are also conducted on the raw fragrance materials that are used in candles to ensure their safety).

Well-formulated scented candles burn cleanly and do not produce a significant amount of soot.

Scent Safety
It’s important to remember to burn all candles, scented or otherwise, in well-ventilated areas. In addition, the NCA says every candle formulation has a maximum amount of fragrance that can be added before the candle will no longer burn properly. They also cite reports of homemade and craft-fair candles containing too much fragrance, or fragrances not approved for candle use, which can lead to improper burn performance or excess sooting.

Founded in 1974, NCA acts as the collective voice for the candle industry in promoting the safe use and enjoyment of candles; pursuing product excellence through quality formulation; monitoring and responding to issues impacting the industry; and advancing the industry as a whole. NCA’s member companies account for more than 90 percent of all candles made in the U.S.

Candle Sense

When deciding where to place your candles, or how many to use, take into consideration the other design elements you are using. If you already have soft lamp light or are placing the candles in a bright room, you may only need one or two to punch up the scent.

If, however, you are going for total romance or are using the candles in a dark location, you may choose to place many candles around the room – perhaps a dozen or more.

Always remember to place the candles in areas where they will not accidentally get knocked over. Sturdy holders designed specifically for the candles you are using, placed on a flat, solid surface or securely anchored to the wall are your best bets. Do not place them where the flame could ignite fabrics or curtains, and never leave burning candles unattended.

Ensure there is enough air flow surrounding the candle, but do not burn the candle in a draft. Doing so will cause the candle to flicker and produce soot.

Trim your candle wick to ¼-inch each time you burn the candle. When you light the candle for the first time, burn it for one hour for each inch of diameter of the candle. For example, your first burn with a 4” candle would be four hours. Do not re-light the candle until it has completely cooled.

This initial burn will ensure your scented candle burns evenly and continues to give off the most potent scent. If you do not follow this procedure, the candle may burn down the center, inhibiting its ability to provide scent to your room.

Always use a wick dipper to extinguish your candle. Simply blowing it out can cause the wick to smoke, disrupting the scent you were trying to achieve in your room.

A great alternative to burning candles is to use a scent burner. Chips of scented wax or small, pre-formed shapes of scented wax can be placed in the burner. They melt into a pool and provide luscious scent for hours of enjoyment. Burners throw off a great deal of scent, making it easy to create your mood with minimal effort.

Whatever mood you wish to create, try one of these tantalizing ways to punch up the power of scent in your home. Play around with various combinations until you find the perfect scent to carry you away like smoke on the night air.
