How to Make Carved Candles

Have you ever walked around the mall, or specialty events and noticed the beautiful carved candles for sale? They are so unique, and a treat to watch being made. They were first made in Germany, by using layers of different colored wax, and are now a world wide phenomenon. It is truly amazing how these are made and really neat to watch. Talented carvers make beautiful swirls and curls in wax to make real works of arts!

In this video they show the carved candles are actually started with a star shaped candle. The candles are then dipped into different color waxes for 30 – 35 times! These works of art take a lot of wax, and a lot patience to make. Also time is of the essence as they have to be completed within 15 minutes of the wax being at the perfect temperature. This video is extra neat because the artist adds the addition of windmills and hummingbirds to these beautiful candles.

In this video they mention people actually burn these. I can’t imagine doing that. They seem more like works of art to be admired…. but then again, if I owned one I would probably end up burning it anyway. If you’re curious how they’re made here is a great video on it! Clementine Candle

I love the website, Apartment Therapy.  It is a great little blog that gives tips and techniques for decorating, home improvement, cleaning and so much more.  Luckily, while browsing around on Youtube today I came across one of their how-to videos.

I have never seen anything like this in my life.  This is how to make a candle by using a real clementine.  It appears, nectarines and other citrus fruit do not work as well, and that clementines are the way to go.  It does not mention how it smells when you burn it though.  I’m thinking a combination of clementine and olive oil?  I’m not sure, but they are so cute!  This would be fabulous for a dinner party.

Amazing Fire Animation

I have to say I watched this video online today and it blew my mind a bit.  Seriously, who as time to do this?  With over a million fews and only a few negative ratings I can see why.  The maker of the video states:

All I can say is ..this took over 2 weeks to do. A lot of fire, A lot of smoke, a lot of heat, and a whole lot of frustration.

What it is?  It is an amazingly impressive and pretty cool video with some cute tricks.  So check out this video on how a lot of time and patience can create an amazing show with some simple tea light candles.

Color Changing Candle.net makes color changing candles either with a wick (that burn) or without (they can be turned “on” and “off”) that are LED (light emitting diode) battery operated. They also offer a patented process that can print any photo, picture or image in full color on a candle. Their color changing candles with full color photos printed on them are being used in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

The color changing candles contain LED chips embedded at the base of each candle. When the wick is lit, an optical sensor inside the candle relays a signal to the chip which in turn produces unique color changes within the candle every few seconds until the flame is blown out. Some candles have no wick, and continue to change color without ever burning or being used. Both types have seven color changes, plus all the shades in between.

I’ll never forget my eighth birthday, when I had a slumber party and all my friends crowded around me while I blew out the candles on my cake. Imagine my surprise when, after making a wish and blowing out the candles…they re-lit like magic!

Of course, now that I’m adult, I realize that it’s really science behind those magical birthday candles.

“Normal” birthday candles have burning embers in the wicks that cause a ribbon of paraffin smoke to rise from the wicks (the embers are hot enough to vaporize paraffin but not hot enough to ignite the paraffin vapor). Re-lighting candles, on the other hand, have an extra something added to the wicks that the embers are hot enough to ignite, which means the embers ignite this substance, which in turn ignite the paraffin vapors.

The most common substance used for this purpose is magnesium, a metal that burns rapidly at an ignition temperature as low as 800 degrees F. Magnesium is located inside the burning wick, where it is shielded from oxygen and cooled by liquid paraffin. When the flame is blown out, magnesium dust is ignited by the ember, casting sparks, one of whch will produce the heat necessary to re-light the paraffin vapor, thus “magically” relighting the candle.
