Yankee Candle Reviews

Today I had an epiphany!  I was thinking instead of searching youtube and posting others’ video blog posts over candle reviews, I thought I should try out my trusty Mac camera and do it myself! After all I love candles, I love writing about candles and I love talking about candles so it just seems like the logical idea to review candles online.

In this post I discuss three yankee candles:

• Black Cherry - The absolutely delicious sweetness of rich, ripe black cherries.
• Cherry Lemonade - The cool sparkle of luscious cherries and just-squeezed lemons is the ultimate summer refresher.
• Farmer’s Market - Autumn’s freshest bounty . . . sweet berries, juicy apples, succulent peaches and warm spices.

I go into a bit of detail regarding the inconsistencies in the wax, the smells of the candles, and the recent Yankee candle purchase in general.   Now, I have to say I absolutely love Yankee candle!  They may have recently missed the mark a bit in regards to my recent orders, but overall I still love them.  I have nothing but love for you Yankee!

Candles by Victoria

Personally, I have never tried these candles, but this is there statement on quality.

Slatkin & Co. New Spring Fresh Picked Candles

In this video ScentMyWay reviews her new haul from Slatkin & Co that she just picked up this week.  Here are the candles that are covered in this video (by the way they all sound so heavenly!) and few observations of each:

I am so making my way over to Bath & Body works ASAP and picking up some of these candles.  I am a total fruity, fresh lover of candles and I am dying to try these!

Trapp Candles

• Orange/ Vanilla- This fragrance is the perfect combination of crisp orange notes elevated by the exquisite addition of Tahitian vanilla. This one reminds me a delicious orange and vanilla creamsicle!  It smells so WONDERFUL!
• Fresh Cut Tuberose – A tropical white flower with an intense, heady floral fragrance reminds you of a gardenia only more powerful and memorable. I am truly not a floral fragrance lover, but this one is my all time favorite candle scent — ever!  It is amazing and I often burn it and almost feel mesmerized by its scent.
• Lemongrass Verbena –  Crisp citrus notes extracted from Asian lemongrass complemented by Brazilian verbena and softened with base notes of vanilla. I adore the combination of scents in this candle.  Relaxing and refreshing!
• Guava/Mango – A fusion of exotic flavors. This mouth-watering blend of two tropical fruits combines succulent mango and flavorful guava. Love this juicy, fruity blend!
• Mediterranean Fig – Sophisticated and fruity at the same time, reminiscent of a fresh fig ripened in the warm Tuscan sun.
• Vanilla Tarte – It’s so good you can taste the Tahitian vanilla with a hint of burnt sugar- you could swear you were in a European pastry shop. Classic, rich vanilla infusion.
• Wild Currant – The perfect currant. It captures the fresh, fruity taste with an unforgettable blend of red and black currant.
• Lavender de Provence – A true lavender, found only in Provence, the lavender capital of the world. A lavender so refined and accurate that it was previously only found in perfumes. I love to burn this one in my bedroom and bathroom — so relaxing!
• Pink Grapefruit – So good you will think it’s a real grapefruit freshly sliced with a sprinkle of sugar. Sweet, juicy and delicious!
• Bamboo Sugar Cane – Notes captured from the heart of the sugar cane with a burst of citrus, enhanced with a touch of green bamboo.
• Blackberry Vanilla – Naturally grown blackberries, freshly picked at the height of the season gently sheared with a bourbon vanilla note.  I love this one. Not too sweet, just right and it makes me crave cobbler.

Now, these are my favorite scents! I have not tried them all, but I adore all of the ones mentioned in this post.  I believe these to be the strongest scented candles I have ever came across!  I truly believe their motto “A bottle of perfume in every candle”.

Slatkin & Co. Candles

So, not only is Yankee Candles introducing their new Spring line of candles that I blogged about HERE, but now it is time to talk about Bath & Body Works new Spring scents!  When I say Bath & Body Works, I of course mean Slatkin & Co. candles.

Slatkin & Co. has been a favorite pick for scented candle lovers everywhere!  They offer a wide variety of scents for all seasons and holidays!  The strong candles are also featured by great sales!  You have to love a good sale when you’re a candle fanatic, like me!

So here are the scents she covers:

• Spring – Tulips, Daisy, Apple Blossoms and more floral notes.  The reviewer notes a lot of green scents such as grass, green apple and citrus.
• Pink Tulip – Tulips, Lilac and more floral notes.  Floral and sweet.
• Mango Beachwood – An exotic sweet island blend.  Vanilla, fruit and beachwood.  Smoky and fruity in one candle.

Unfortunately these do not sound very appealing to me, as I do not enjoy floral.  Hopefully, some scented candles will come out featuring juicy, sweet and fruity notes — those are what I like!

Yankee Country Lemonade

I have been receiving multiple emails regarding the Yankee Candle Semi-Annual Sale. Now let me preface this by saying, I recently experienced the customer service of Yankee Candle and was very impressed! I received the wrong order in the mail, called the customer service number and they went above and beyond to replace my original order — and to keep the one I received by mistake! It was quite the score!

So here is a video on the review of Yankee Candle Semi-Annual Sale going on right now.  The normal jar candles that are $25 are now 2 for $25.  It is funny because the candles in this video that are covered are ones that I love, and are also currently burning due to this sale!

• Country Lemonade – I love this one!  It is a delicious sugared lemon scent.  A fresh lemonade scent.
• Sun & Sand – fresh and inviting.  Beachy and perfect for Spring/Summertime.
• Maple Pancakes – breakfast in a candle.  Similar to oatmeal or an apple crisp topping.

Sparklin Mojito Candle

As Spring is knocking on our door and *almost* right around the corner, I thought this would be a great video to post for some great Spring time scents.  This video is technically 2011 scents; however, most of the them are still available this season in stores or via Ebay.

Karen has a great blog and youtube channel called “Scent My Way”.  She does wonderful, thorough reviews using very descriptive adjectives for the candles she reviews.

Here she reviews some of these favorite Spring time candles:

• Yankee “Garden Cucumber” – she states this is one of her all time favorite Yankee candles.  She states this is not available in stores, but can be found on Ebay, or sometimes in the treasure section of Yankee.
• Yankee “Spa Fresh” – also discontinued.  She states it is lavender, eucalyptus and mint.
• Slatkin & Co “Pink Sangria” – very fresh, pink and fruity sweet.
• Slatkin & Co. “Pineapple Orchid”- floral and fruit all rolled into one “interesting” candle.  Reviewer thinks this one is quite sweet.
• Slatkin & Co. “Fresh Lemon” – this has been brought back year after year.  Not too sweet, not a dessert-like candle.  Sugary lemon, but not creamy.
• Slatkin & Co. “Sparkling Mojito” – lemon and lime as top notes, with fresh mint smells.  This sounds heavenly!

She goes on to review more picks with great detail!  I’m already looking forward to the sweet freshness of Spring and purchasing new candles for the season!

No. 64 White Lotus & Lychee

I’m so excited to smell the new release from Trapp Candles – No. 64 White Lotus & Lychee. It sounds heavenly and inspired by the smells and delights of the Orient!

Trapp describes their new candle release as the following:

This exotic fragrance captures the delicate beauty of the white lotus flower enchanced with fresh lychee fruit and creamy jasmine rice.

To me it reminds me of this Thai dish that may husband absolutely adores, it is called Mango sticky rice.  He orders it every time we go to our favorite restaurant as he describes it as sweet, creamy and delicious.  However, lychee is quite different than mango.  So, maybe that is not the best comparison, but my mind goes there with free association.  Lychee sort of reminds me of grape or pear.  It also leaves floral notes on the palate, which is perfect for a candle!

I cannot wait to try this one and plan to call a couple local flower shops today to see if they have it on hand!  Have you tried the White Lotus & Lychee candle?  If so, please leave a comment and let us know what you think of it!

How to Make Carved Candles

Have you ever walked around the mall, or specialty events and noticed the beautiful carved candles for sale? They are so unique, and a treat to watch being made. They were first made in Germany, by using layers of different colored wax, and are now a world wide phenomenon. It is truly amazing how these are made and really neat to watch. Talented carvers make beautiful swirls and curls in wax to make real works of arts!

In this video they show the carved candles are actually started with a star shaped candle. The candles are then dipped into different color waxes for 30 – 35 times! These works of art take a lot of wax, and a lot patience to make. Also time is of the essence as they have to be completed within 15 minutes of the wax being at the perfect temperature. This video is extra neat because the artist adds the addition of windmills and hummingbirds to these beautiful candles.

In this video they mention people actually burn these. I can’t imagine doing that. They seem more like works of art to be admired…. but then again, if I owned one I would probably end up burning it anyway. If you’re curious how they’re made here is a great video on it! These are made by Holland House Candles, and in my humble opinion are absolutely AMAZING!

Votive Candles

This is a great video on how to make the simple and elegant votive candles. To make votive candles you will need:

• Fire extinguisher or baking soda
• 1 lb. candle wax
• stove top or hot plate
• double boiler with lid
• candle or candy thermometer
• clean work area
• wax paper or newspaper
• wicks with metal tabs
• spatula
• votive molds or paper cups
• toothpicks
• small knife or cloth

OPTIONAL:

• candle colorant
• candle fragrance

Seems like a lot to gather up, but once you have it all in place, it is simple to make an array of votive candles.  These candles are perfect for dinner parties and impromptu get-togethers!
