White Barn candles are sold at many Bath & Body Works stores and their candles are strong scented and come in a variety of fragrances.  They have had favorite scents like Blueberry Muffin, Fig, Vanilla Woods, Warm Apple Pie, Spice, Cookie, Peppermint, Tree, and Winterberry, but have also offered up unusual fragrances like their Buttered Mashed Potatoes candle!

White Barn is by Limited Brands, a company which offers several quality fragrance products by brands including Bath & Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, and C.O. Bigelow among others.

Unfortunately, White Barn candles are not as readily available as they used to be, so you may not find them in every Bath & Body Works store anymore.  However, Bath & Body Works still offers a host of strong scented quality candles, including other candles made by Limited Brands - so your quest for great candles won’t be wasted when you make a trip there!

Candles are a lot like snowflakes (or people, for that matter)–they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. There are, however, some common candle types that every candle collector, enthusiast or fan should know about.

Tapers
Tapes are long, slender candles. They are typically six to 18 inches high and often found on tables in restaurants and homes. Candle holders keep them steady.

Pillars
Pillars (my favorites) are free-standing candles, usually at least three inches in diameter, and often have more than one wick. They are made in a variety of shapes including round, square and hexagonal. They are free standing, but they also must be burned on a heat-resistant candle holder.
  
Container, Jar or Filled
These are candles that, during manufacturing, are poured directly into a glass, metal or ceramic container specifically designed to hold the wax and withstand the heat of the burning candle. 

Votives
These small, cylindrical candles, are typically about 1½ inches in diameter and 2 or 2½ inches high. They are made to fit in a “cup” or votive holder, and are often used for religious ceremonies. 
 
Gel 
Gel candles are transparent and made primarily from gelled mineral oils or gelled synthetic hydrocarbons. “Soft” (or quasi-rigid) gels are poured into a container to maintain the candle’s shape. “Hard” gel candles are able to stand on their own.

Tealights
Tealigh candles are small, cylindrical, filled candles, usually about 1 inch in diameter and 1½ inches high, typically poured into a metal holder.  

Luminarias
These outdoor candles are made by placing a 15-hour votive in a light-diffusing container filled with sand.

Specialty
These are the catch-all category of any unusually shaped or sculpted free-standing candles, often used as decorative artwork, and sometimes called novelty candles.

Birthday
Birthday candles are typically two inches long, have a very small circumference, and often are found on the tops of cakes and cupcakes.

Soy candles are non-toxic, produce far less soot, and burn longer than traditional wax candles. They clean up easily if you accidentally knock one over, and they are produced from a renewable resource, making them farmer-friendly as well.

Triple Scented for Maximum Aroma

Candle manufacturers realize the consumer wants to get the most bang – or scent – for their buck. Many producers of soy candles make “triple scented” ones, providing the strongest and longest-lasting aromas. Soy candles routinely burn up to 50% longer than traditional paraffin wax candles.

A normal candle is made with 0.5 ounces of fragrance oil per pound of wax. A triple-scented candle contains 1.5 ounces of fragrance oil per pound of wax, which is likely the most the wax can hold and still be usable for candles. This produces a far stronger scent that will last longer.

Cleaner Air with Soy

Most people do not realize how much better soy candles are for a cleaner environment and overall improved health. Especially for those who burn candles regularly, the difference between paraffin wax and soy can be alarming.

Studies by Purdue University and Iowa University found that carcinogens are released into the atmosphere when paraffin wax candles are burned. This includes two major cancer-causing chemicals, benzene and toluene.

In addition, it was found that “petro-soot,” the by-product of burning a petroleum product, is more harmful to your health than second hand smoke.

The cleaner burn of soy candles is far less aggravating to conditions such as asthma and allergies, and the indoor air will maintain higher quality since there are no harmful chemicals contained in soy.

Traditional wax candles are manufactured primarily with paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum. These candles produce heavy black soot when burned, and the wax is difficult to remove from fabric and other surfaces if it gets spilled. This makes soy candles the friendlier choice for those who have pets and children.

Soy candles are made with all-natural wicks rather than ones that contain metal elements, providing an even cleaner burn. Cotton is a common wick material.

For all of these reasons, soy candles are the cleaner, healthier alternative.

They’re Cute, Too

Whether you want candles that look like a dozen freshly-baked cookies or a bowl full of fresh fruit, you can find a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes of soy candles.

Since soy is very soft, it is not a good choice for freestanding candles such as pillars and tapers. You will most likely find soy candles in the forms of jars and votives. They are made in almost every color and every scent imaginable.

Some companies mix soy with vegetable oil to produce sturdier candles. While still clean-burning and environmentally friendly, these candles can be found in more traditional shapes.

In addition to candles, you can burn soy chips or scented soy pieces in a burner. The soy wax pools in the burner, and the heat releases the scent into your home, giving you hours upon hours of enjoyment.

Burning Soy Candles

You must take certain measures to get the most out of your soy candles. First, be sure to trim the wick to ¼-inch each time you prepare to light the candle. Trim off any soot from previous burnings, taking care not to let the soot fall into the candle wax.

Ensure the wick is centered in the candle. While an off-center wick will still burn, the candle may not burn evenly. This is particularly important with scented candles because an uneven burn will not properly release the aroma from the candle.

Do not blow on the candle to extinguish it. Use a wick dipper instead. By dipping the wick into the wax it will not only extinguish the candle without any soot, but it will also prepare the wick for the next burn.

When you initially burn your soy candle, burn it for one hour for each inch in diameter. Therefore, for a two-inch candle, you would burn it for two hours. This establishes a proper melt pool and will essentially “teach” the candle how to burn most efficiently. Failure to do this may result in the candle burning down its core, which will not allow the candle to emit much in the way of scent.

Place your soy candles in an area where they will be free of any draft, yet receive ample air flow around the candle. This will ensure the best burn without flickering or ash production.

Finding Soy Candles

You do not need to go to a specialty shop to find soy candles to enjoy. Most major department stores and many supermarkets now carry them in addition to paraffin wax candles.

A soy candle will most likely be marked as such on the label. If it does not indicate soy on the packaging, it is most likely paraffin wax.

Soy candles will cost a bit more than your traditional wax, but overall it is cheaper than beeswax and provides greater burn time than paraffin, making soy candles an excellent value overall.

Immerse yourself in rich fern scents, or wild jasmine. Take a walk through the woods surrounded by the smell of oak, pine, wild moss, and clover leaves.

Or sit in a sunny garden filled with honeysuckle, hydrangea, freesia, orchid, and lilac. Combine the scents with those of fresh fruit such as citrus, and you will have a melody of invigorating scents to ignite your senses.

The Romantic Interlude

The soft glow of candles enhanced by bewitching aromas sets the stage for your most intimate moments. Bask in the glow of rich musk and patchouli, cloves, rose petals, and the more understated yet equally intriguing sandalwood. The indulgence of such sensual aromas is intoxicating.

Freshen the Nursery

There are a variety of candles designed specifically to eliminate odors. A strategically placed candle near the changing table or diaper disposal may just do the trick to keep the baby’s room smelling fresh and new.

You can even enhance the wondrous scent of baby powder with candles that smell just like the real thing.

Aromatherapy

Some scents are just good for your physical and mental well-being. Eucalyptus, mint, and sage are not only refreshing for your mind, but can help cleanse your sinuses as well. Use these scented candles to help rid yourself of allergy symptoms or to clear your head when you have a cold.

Candle Sense

When deciding where to place your candles, or how many to use, take into consideration the other design elements you are using. If you already have soft lamp light or are placing the candles in a bright room, you may only need one or two to punch up the scent.

If, however, you are going for total romance or are using the candles in a dark location, you may choose to place many candles around the room – perhaps a dozen or more.

Always remember to place the candles in areas where they will not accidentally get knocked over. Sturdy holders designed specifically for the candles you are using, placed on a flat, solid surface or securely anchored to the wall are your best bets. Do not place them where the flame could ignite fabrics or curtains, and never leave burning candles unattended.

Ensure there is enough air flow surrounding the candle, but do not burn the candle in a draft. Doing so will cause the candle to flicker and produce soot.

Trim your candle wick to ¼-inch each time you burn the candle. When you light the candle for the first time, burn it for one hour for each inch of diameter of the candle. For example, your first burn with a 4” candle would be four hours. Do not re-light the candle until it has completely cooled.

This initial burn will ensure your scented candle burns evenly and continues to give off the most potent scent. If you do not follow this procedure, the candle may burn down the center, inhibiting its ability to provide scent to your room.

Always use a wick dipper to extinguish your candle. Simply blowing it out can cause the wick to smoke, disrupting the scent you were trying to achieve in your room.

A great alternative to burning candles is to use a scent burner. Chips of scented wax or small, pre-formed shapes of scented wax can be placed in the burner. They melt into a pool and provide luscious scent for hours of enjoyment. Burners throw off a great deal of scent, making it easy to create your mood with minimal effort.

Whatever mood you wish to create, try one of these tantalizing ways to punch up the power of scent in your home. Play around with various combinations until you find the perfect scent to carry you away like smoke on the night air.
